Engineer officer · Engine room

Keep the ship alive. Run the plant.

Marine engineers power the vessel. Follow the path from GME or BTech Marine through the engineer ranks to Chief Engineer, with the engine courses that help along the way.

From trainee to Chief Engineer

Each rank sits on a depth scale. Select one to read what the job involves. The depths are an illustration, not a time, pay or exam scale.

Selected rank

Trainee Marine Engineer

Learns engine room practice and watchkeeping at sea, under supervision.

Sea time, exams and certificates for each step are set by the regulator. Ask ProCareerTek for the current route.

04 · The route

The engine route in four moves

A general outline. Exams, sea time and certificates are set by the regulator, so confirm the current rules.

  1. 1
    Move 01

    Qualify

Complete BTech Marine or GME, both listed by ProCareerTek.

  2. 2
    Move 02

    Train at sea

Work as a trainee engineer, learning engine room practice and watchkeeping.

  3. 3
    Move 03

    Hold a watch

Fourth and Third Engineers take watches and look after assigned machinery.

  4. 4
    Move 04

    Lead the department

Second Engineer and Chief Engineer run maintenance and answer for the plant.

05 · The engine room

Machinery, measured and cared for

A marine engineer reads gauges, listens to machinery and follows the planned maintenance schedule. Teamwork with the bridge matters as much as technical skill.

The NSI-003 Engine Room Resource Management course is featured on that theme, and NSI-009 goes deeper into automation and control.

  • Main engine and auxiliary machinery
  • Electrical plant and automation
  • Planned maintenance and fuel care

A plain list of areas, not a syllabus. Technical teams such as Nanak technical ship management work in these same areas.

07 · Engine vocabulary

Words a trainee engineer hears

01Watch
A fixed period of duty in or over the engine room, with logs kept and alarms answered.
02Planned maintenance
Upkeep scheduled by running hours or dates so parts are serviced before they fail.
03Auxiliary
Machinery other than the main engine, such as generators and pumps.
04Class and Flag
The classification society and flag state whose rules and surveys the ship follows.
05Drydock
A scheduled period out of the water for inspection and repair.
06Skilled trades
Electricians, welders and fitters: see international labour supply.

A marine engineer looks after the ship's main engine, generators, pumps and electrical systems, rising from trainee engineer through Fourth, Third and Second Engineer to Chief Engineer. ProCareerTek lists GME, BTech Marine and Chief Engineer pathways on its engine officer programs page.

GME stands for Graduate Marine Engineering, a route for engineering graduates who want to become marine engineers. Which degree branches qualify and what the entry rules are can change, so check with the ProCareerTek counsellors before you plan your application.

BTech Marine is a degree-level program taken after Class 12, while GME is for people who already hold an engineering degree. Both lead into the engineer officer pathway and both are listed on the ProCareerTek services page with details available from the team.

NSI-003 Engine Room Resource Management and NSI-009 Advanced Automation and Control Engineering are featured for engineers, with more in the engine category of the catalogue. See the advanced courses page and check each course against your certificate and rank first.

They keep the main engine, auxiliary machinery, fuel systems and electrical plant running safely and efficiently, and carry out planned maintenance. Technical management teams such as Nanak technical ship management depend on this work and on machinery reliability and fuel diagnostics.

Yes, Nanak Ship Management supplies international skilled labour including certified electricians, welders (6G, TIG and MIG), structural fitters and helpers. If your skill is a trade rather than an officer route, read the international labour supply page.
